A sepia tone carte-de-visite of the office and quarters of Captain Horace James. Captured with asymmetrical vignette is the large light-colored house of Captain Horace James, Union Army chaplain and a Freedmen's Bureau superintendent in North Carolina. There are several trees with bare branches throughout the property, the majority captured within the picket fencing that surrounds the house. A two-wheel cart rests by the largest tree, just outside the gate to the house.
