Plow plane made by Francis Nicholson

Francis Nicholson, American, 1683 - 1753 · 1728-1753

A wooden plow plane. The fence and stems of the tool are joined with wooden pegs. The stems slide through square openings in the body. The metal blade, at top, has a wooden blade edge. Wooden screws tighten to hold the stems in place at the decided width. On short end of the body, vertically in relief, is [F*NICHOLSON / WRENTHAM]. Taped on same end, black ink on discolored paper, is [23]. There are cracks on the stock and stems. There is evidence of older dents and abrasions, but the entire plane has a dark stain obscuring the damage from past use.
