A black-and-white photograph mounted on a card of Second Lieutenant Charles Young, 9th Cavalry, United States Army. Young is depicted in bust pose with his head and torso turned slightly towards the left edge of the photograph. He has a serious expression on his face and is looking up and into the distance towards the left. Young is wearing an M-1895 Officer’s Undress Coat with U.S and 9th Cavalry collar insignia and second lieutenant shoulder straps. The rectangular shaped photograph is mounted on textured dark gray cardstock. Below the photograph is the imprint of the photographer, F.S. Biddle, printed in gold tone ink that reads [Biddle[underlined]] on the left, [34 E. MAIN ST. / XENIA, O.] on the right, and a graphic of an artist’s palette and brushes at the center with the text [BIDDLE / PHOTO / CO.] printed inside the palette graphic. The verso of the cabinet card is cream colored with a black ink inscription written by William Sanders Scarborough that reads [Lt. Chas. Young - / 9th Cav. - the third / Negro graduate from / West Point - Class ‘89 / He is now active[inserted above] Major of / 9th bat. O.V.I. / appointed by the / Gov.]. There are also small pencil inscriptions at the top left and right corners that read [PH.05-2659] on the left and [CMXYX-05] on the right.
