On page 39, under the heading [INTERESTING ARTICLES] is commentary from the Charleston Patriot regarding Virginia's role as a "breeder of slaves for a great part of the union," suggesting that sales of enslaved persons from Virginia should be taxed as any commodity. The article argues that this is in Virginia's interest in opposing "the false philanthropy or mawkish sensibility of the abolitionists."
