“John W. Quinney, in civilized dress, is a civilized Indian, well-educated---speaking good English---is a Baptist missionary preacher, and a very plausible and eloquent speaker.” George Catlin probably painted this portrait at Green Bay (in today’s Wisconsin) in 1836. (Catlin, Letters and Notes, vol. 2, no. 47, 1841; reprint 1973)
