William Thomas Evans was an Irish immigrant who became the head of a wholesale dry goods company. He is remembered, however, as a collector of American paintings. In the early 1900s he donated a large part of his collection to this museum, at the time called the National Gallery of Art, which later became the National Collection of Fine Arts and is now called the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
