Julia Clarkson Du Pré (1822-1869) was an established artist in her own right and remained active after her marriage to Henry Brintnell Bounetheau in 1841. She was educated at the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, and studied art in Paris until a bank failure in 1838 forced her return to South Carolina. She and her mother then established “ladies’ finishing schools” in Aiken and Charleston.
