Edward Moran, born Bolton, England 1829-died New York City 1901 · ca. 1889
This painting shows a small fishing sloop, cutting through wind-driven waves. Edward Moran was fascinated by the power of the ocean, and many of his paintings show dramatic shipwrecks and boats in distress. In spite of the threatening weather, the men know the sea and do not fear its moods.
