Excavated 1896 in two rooms of a large building at Phylakopi, Melos.This watercolor gives a strong impression of the original color scheme, which has significantly faded on the original fragments. Only the color of the paper has yellowed with age from its original creamy white. Framed by a black border stripe at top and bottom, flying fish dart among sponges and egg-shaped pebbles of blue and saffron yellow. Numerous flecks of blue add to the impression of movement perhaps suggesting bubbles or sea foam. Marine themes were popular in the art of the Cycadic islands and Crete in the Late Bronze Age.The original is in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
