Japanese bridal wear most often combined the auspicious patterns of turtles and cranes with pine trees, plum blossoms, and bamboo. This wedding uchikake, however, features a phoenix, the most common pattern for Chinese bridal ensembles. The uchikake, or outer robe, is worn unbelted and trails along impressively behind the wearer.
