In 1943, American artist Paul Sample toured the Pacific Theatre, sketching and painting the activities of soldiers. Many of these works were published as part of a Life Magazine article the following year. This painting, not included in the previously mentioned publication, was donated by Sample to Dartmouth College, and currently resides in the Hood Museum of Art collections.
