In this section of the Khamsa, Amir Khusrau recounts the tale of a king who accidentally kills a shepherd while hunting. He offers the boy’s grieving mother a choice: to take his sword and cut off his head, which will fall in the golden dish between them, or to accept the second dish filled with gold. An interest in European styles of painting is seen in the depiction of the three figures behind the old woman, and the landscape with Europeanized architectural setting above.
