Chasuble

The eclectic patterns on this chasuble were created from a single unusual Indian chintz, pieced together in Europe, creating two distinctly different designs on the front and the back of the garment. The back displays a pattern of repeating mound-shaped motifs enclosed in an ogival frame linked by floral sprays while the front exhibits a red diamond-shaped motif resting on a blue band. The painted and dyed textile was probably based on Western European silks of the first quarter of the eighteenth century, which have comparably robust designs.
