This panel is attributed to either the school of Bernardo Daddi or Daddi himself, a pupil of Giotto, who ran a large workshop. On the left of the cross the Madonna is shown supported by St John and Mary Magdalen. Two more of the holy women stand behind her. On the right stand a Roman commander with two soldiers and another man. St Clare and a Franciscan monk kneel at the foot of the cross. There are two angels on either side of the cross, carrying bowls to catch the blood falling from the wounds of Christ.
