Hat of the chief of Mulgrave, [1789 and 1794]

Summary: Hat of the head of Mulgrave, in the shape of a bell from which stands out a kind of overlapping tube or rings, from whose upper end three strands of hair fall. The lower part is decorated with different drawings of geometric character. Next to the hat is a kind of wooden plume with manes. Drawing made during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. It is attributed to the sailor José Cardero, who also acted as draftsman during the expedition. On the trip to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Nutka, he made several views and portraits of indigenous people, some of them recorded in Madrid by Fernando Selmá to illustrate the relationship of the trip of the Sutil and Mexicana schooners.
