With correspondence. The Cathedral is surrounded by three parts of the buildings of the former Holy Trinity monastery, the work of the Viennese architect Martinelli. The monastery was built between 1741-1747. Here we opened in 1754 the first Romanian schools: school, Latin school and priesthood. Their foundation stone was laid by Bishop Ioan Inocenatra Micu in 1738. After 1848 new bodies are erected on the left (Archdiocesan Theological Seminary, Girls' School) and the right (Preparandia, Boys Internate). - The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by Bishop Ioan Inocen- u Micu in 1738, following the relocation of the episcopal seat from Făgăraș to Blaj. The construction is made according to the plans of the Viennese architect Ioan Martinelli, and is dureed until 1749. In 1837, under Bishop Ioan Lemeny, the church undergoes radical transformations, which will give it today’s form. A piece of great artistic value is the iconostasis worked in lime wood (the largest in the country) by the carpenter Aldea from Târgu Mureș between 1749- 1765. A precious object of the cathedral is the huge carpet, caught above the choir on festive occasions. It was woven in Maramureș, after the drawing of Octavian Smigelschi and is worked in gobelin style, depicting a huge eagle with wings spread over the “New Jerusalem.”
