Christ Presented to the People (Ecce Homo)

With this large print Rembrandt demonstrated that he was the artistic heir of Lucas van Leyden, the greatest 16th-century Dutch graphic artist. He used the latter’s sizeable Ecce Homo as his model for an even larger print of the same subject. Pontius Pilate presents the captive Jesus to the people with the words ‘Ecce Homo’ ‘Behold the Man.’ Rembrandt derived the podium and several groups of figures from Van Leyden.
