Rembrandt further worked up the first state of this print (No. 9). He filled in the group of trees and introduced lines to create a greater sense of space. He also reduced the copper printing plate at the lower edge. The deeply incised lines with their raised burr lend the shaded areas in the impression a dark velvety texture, giving rise to a powerful atmospheric effect.
