POST MEDIEVAL CLOTH SEAL

One complete inner lead disc of a post-medieval four part cloth seal. These seals were cast as plain and then later stamped with the chosen design. This disc is plain on the reverse whilst the front carries the 'Charles II type head' with the inscription OF ENG LAND around the portrait, the border is decorated with a circle of beading. This particular seal probably dates to the reign of James II (1685-1688). This disc has been pierced directly above the portrait and was possibly used as a pendant or label after its initial use as a seal.
