This is a hammered silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). This coin is from the third and fourth issue on the smaller flan. The obverse would have had the portrait bust left, now worn away and the reverse has square-topped shield on long cross fourchée, with what remains of the date above. The coin has been cut in half, which has removed the mintmark that might help confirm the date and type. Based on the available detail, it is dated 1562. The cut may have been done in antiquity and looks deliberate.
