POST MEDIEVAL COIN

This is a hammered silver, post medieval groat of Henry VII (1485-1509). This coin is from the profile issue begun in the opening years of the 16th century. The obverse has the very fine profile portrait of the crowned king facing right with a double band to crown. The reverse has the long cross fourchee, over royal shield. Both sides have the Pheon mintmark which dates this coin to the period of 1505-9. The obverse legend is separated by crosslets which have added annulets to either side of the ‘VII’. The reverse legend is distinguished by pairs of crosslets.The coin is in well struck and in fine condition; the surface is now blackened with age.
