Henry Wellcome commissioned the artist W. Langdon Kihn to make portrait drawings of certain native American people wearing their traditional costume. To make the portraits Kihn used a special kind of patent pastel. Kihn's works in the Wellcome Library include this portrait of Captain Jack, a medicine man from British Columbia, Canada, wearing a magnificent headdress made from bear's claws. The portrait forms a pair with a portrait of Captain Jack's wife, Noch Slak.
