Richard Sandell, RCMG
Portrait of artist and performer Mat Fraser, posing with a prosthetic arm. This is one of a series of portraits taken to accompany the research project "Stories of a Different Kind" initiated by the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) at the University of Leicester. Artist and performer Mat Fraser developed a live performance "Cabinet of Curiosities: how disability was kept in a box" that explored how physical and mental disabilities are seen and understood. The project was run in partnership with the Science Museum, Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and SHAPE arts with advice and support from the Smithsonian Institution and funding by the Wellcome Trust. It was the winner of the Observer Magazine Ethical Award for Arts and Culture in 2014.
