Pulmonary, [1789 and 1794]

Abstract: Preparatory point in which is represented a bracelet around which appears a lively set of characters in different attitudes. In the first place two men fight while a woman tries to separate them, others are in visible state of drunkenness, while small groups of women and men chat and drink pulque normally. Performed during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. This point is signed by the Italian artist Juan Ravenet, in charge of drawing the portraits of types and customs. The bracelets in Mexico were large public taverns, like the one in this note, consisting of a wooden shed under which the bracelets were placed with the large stains that served to preserve the pulque. This drink, extracted from the trunk of the magüey and of pre-Columbian tradition, is very popular in Mexico.
