Copper alloy fragment of a probable abbot seal matrix dating to the Medieval period. The matrix is circular and would have measured approximately 90mm in diameter when whole. The central image features a seated figure, possibly holding a babe in arms. Two smaller figures are situated to the left of the central figure, hands clasped in prayer under a canopy. It is likey that the missing fragment bore a similar desing to the right of the central figure. The image is surrounded by a legend which is now faint and difficult to identify. The section remaining reads S' SIGILLUM [de] ABBIS COM[...]. The matrix has suffered an old break diagonally across so that now only c. 60% remains. The reverse of the seal is plain and expands in thickness towards a central circular projection. The engraving of the seal is now very weak and leaves little impression when pressed.The fragment measures 44.5mm in width and 46.6mm in length, 17.2mm in thickness and weighs 88.83g.
