A furniture fitting: comprising a pair of incomplete openwork hinge-plates from a box or a casket, secured by an iron spindle. Now folded so that the front face of one plate is hidden. The more visible plate, with two loops and one fixing hole, ends in a fleur-de-lis, but this may have been set within an openwork arrangement. The surface is tinned and decorated with fine rocker-arm engraving. The other plate, with a single loop, has one iron-filled fixing hole, scalloped edges and three conjoined rounded apertures, perhaps once a quatrefoil. Width 21.5mm. Length of more intact plate >25mm. Probably 14th or 15th century.
