Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup-strap mount, a variant of Williams 1997 Class A Type 10A. Apex loop missing. Of two fixing holes just above the base one is iron filled. Several details show this to be a variant: the animal head without comma-shaped ears, and with two asymmetrically placed drilled blind holes for eyes; a small lobe on both sides just below the apex loop; on the animal's body numerous grooves or channels made by, or enhanced with an engraving tool post casting; no flange. >49mm, x 32mm. 11th century.
