The case is in the form of a book, with a clasp mechanism. The 'spine of the book is stamped in gold 'SOUVENI' the R is not fully visible.

Very faded case

Portrait of a man and a woman, possibly husband and wife. Three quarter length view, seated portrait, with a three quarter profile view of their faces. Hand coloured with gold highlights. Both figures lean in towards one another, leaning on the same arm of the chair. The man holds a book or leaflet in his right hand. The woman holds her hand to her face in a gesture of contemplation. Neither figure looks directly out of the canvas, both looking out of the right and left respectively. Both figures are well dressed. The woman wears only one glove and sits in an elaborately decorated chair.
