He wears trousers, a coat with buttons up the centre and cuff, with epaulettes on the shoulders, the left one fringed, signifying he is a junior ranking army officer. A medal with a red ribbon and green and silver five pointed star is pinned on his left breast. He holds a hat in the crook in his left elbow. A sword with tassel around the hilt hangs at his left side. In his left hand he holds a glove whilst wearing the other on the right hand. He has a receding hair line and facial hair in the van Dyke style (goatee and flared moustache). Plain background. Frame is Rococo style (reverse) in wood,with gesso and paper mache covering. Overall black.

The woman is wearing a black dress with white collar and fingerless gloves. Her hair is worn in a centre parting with a cap, which has long lappets. The youngest child on her lap wears pumps with straps, mid-calf socks, and a knee-length short sleeved dress. The second youngest child stands to the left of the mother's lap and wears a short sleeved plaid dress with pantaloons visible at the hem. Her hair is worn in short ringlets with a side parting. In her hands she holds a toy musket. Behind her stands the oldest girl to the left of the woman's shoulders. She wears a shawl around her shoulders and over her dress, with her right hand resting on her mother's left shoulder. She wears her hair in a middle parting. The second oldest girl stand to the right, leaning in towards the woman. She wears a layered dress with a shawl around her elbows. Her hair is worn in a middle parting with ringlets. Plain background.

He wears a dark jacket, paler waistcoat, white shirt with gold buttons (gold highlights) and dark cravat. Clean-shaven, with longish curly dark hair. His left hand holds a book, his finger inserted in a page. the chair is ornate, turned wood. The glass dome reflects windows in the studio.
