The unpainted wooden shaft has a forklike notch at the other end and a hole at the other. The line made of baleen passes around both ends of the shaft. A sinker with an unbarbed metal hook is tied to the line with a sinew leader. The sinker is a “fish” made of red stone and walrus ivory and has two turquoise glass (padre) beads for eyes. Originally in the collections of the Peabody Museum, at Harvard University, in the United States. Donated to Peabody Museum by Capt. Miner Bruce in 1898. Collected most likely by Capt. Bruce himself when he was Superintendent for the reindeer herding project in Port Clarence 1892 - 1893 or in the next years, until 1897, when he was collecting artifacts for several important US museums (VanStone, 1986).
