Lettering: John Elwes esqr. M.P. for Berkshire. He was a man of clear perception, sound judgement, and unshaken integrity, and in such high estimation, was he held for his love of justice, that numberless disputes among his constituents and others, which would have been decided by courts of law, were left to his sole arbitrament. Yet, notwithstanding his great and good qualities, he was a man respecting himself of an extraordinary penurious and singular turn. He died Novr. 26. 1789, aged 80.
