Fan-shaped ornaments form part of the array of Buddhist sculpture in a temple, where they hang above and around the figures. They developed from flower decorations, bound with ribbons, which served as offerings in earlier times. Despite the fact that this metal ornament could not have been viewed from close at hand, it is executed in great detail, with precise openwork motifs of flowers and birds.
