Engraving on paper of the Flagellation of Christ, also know as the Scourging at the Pillar, engraved by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600/1601) after a design Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) probably in Antwerp in 1582. Latin text below from John 19.1. On orders from Pilate, Jesus is tied to a spiked pillar and flogged by two soldiers with a scourge and birch branches. Figures watch from the back and side of the room; clothes, a sword and branches on the floor in the foreground. A drawing of similar composition by Maarten de Vos in the British Museum (1906,0723.14).
