Engraving on paper of the Betrayal and Arrest of Christ, engraved by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600/1601) after a design Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) probably in Antwerp in 1582. Latin text below from John 28. Judas identifies Jesus with a kiss on the cheek. Peter cuts off the ear of Malchus, the high priest’s servant, who lies on the ground next to his lantern. The night scene is crowded with soldiers and officials carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Drawing by de Vos of a similar composition in the British Museum (1906,0723.9).
