Vos, Maarten de, after · 1580
Engraving on paper of the Freeing of Paul and Silas from a series based on the life of St Paul, engraved and published by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) after a design by Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) in Cologne in 1580. Latin text inscribed below is from Acts 16.25-26. A violent earthquake opens the doors of the jail and loosens the chains of the prisoners. The jailor, about to kill himself for allowing Paul and Silas to escape, is stopped by Paul. In the background, the saints are condemned to prison.
