Collaert, Adriaen, attributed to
Engraving on paper of episodes from the story of Isaac and Rebekah from a series of Genesis stories, attributed to Adriaen Collaert (c.1560-1618) after Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) and published by Eduard van Hoeswinckel (fl. 1570s-1583) in Antwerp between 1579 and 1583. The central panel depicts Eleizer’s oath to Abraham, who is sent to find a wife for Isaac among Abraham’s relatives. The three small scenes are, from left, Eliezar and Rebekah at the well, Eliezer explaining his mission to Laban (Rebekah’s brother), and the meeting of Rebekah and Isaac. Latin verse inscribed on cartouche below relates the birth of Rebekah’s children after years of childlessness.
