Collaert, Hans (the elder)

Engraving on paper of the Resurrection surrounded by Christ’s appearances after the Resurrection engraved by Hans Collaert and published by Eduard van Hoeswinckel (fl. 1570s-1583) in Antwerp between 1579 and 1583. The central panel depicts the Resurrection of Christ standing triumphant upon his tomb, surrounded by sleeping and awe-struck soldiers. Latin verse inscribed in central cartouche below. The surrounding scenes, with accompanying biblical citations, are clockwise from the top: the Ascension of Christ (Acts 1), Jesus appears to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee (John 21), doubting Thomas or the incredulity of St Thomas (John 20), Jesus appears to his disciples in a locked room (John 20), the women at the empty tomb (Mark 16), Noli me tangere or Jesus appears as a gardener to Mary Magdalene (John 20), and Jesus appears to two disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24).
