April '46 scratched on back of plate

Half length portrait of a young man, seated, facing the camera. He has a moustache, sideburns and a chin beard. He wears a dark jacket and waistcoat (with gold chain, gold highlights) over a white shirt. He has a distinctively tied pale cravat, more like a modern tie with the ends coming down the shirt front. A white handkerchief, it appears, is in his right jacket pocket. A top hat lies on the table beside him (red cloth) where his left elbow also rests. Hand coloured, gold highlights.

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.
