Queen Victoria, in a pale flounced dress and white lacy bonnet stands next to Prince Albert at the centre front of their group, which looks to their left towards an ecclesiastic (Archbishop?) and other church figures, with chairs behind them. Behind, a large choral group, male and female, rises up in front of an elaborate baldachin canopy. To the side of the group, lengths of fabric are strung to form a backdrop. The structure of the Crystal Palace is seen in the girders and windows beyond this, and the balcony to the right of the image. More people line the upper levels.

Three quarter length portrait of a clean shaven young man (Egerton Cleeve) seated facing the camera. He wears a dark jacket, open to reveal a white waistcoat and shirt with down-turned collar with a small black cravat or tie, and dark trousers. His left arm rests on a table covered with a pale cloth and a book. His left hand is closed in a fist and rests on his left leg. His legs appear crossed. Part of the oval wood back of the chair is visible, as is part of the padded seat. A grave in the British Cemetery in Montevideo, Uruguay (Plot: F 006) gives Egerton Cleeve's date of birth as August 9, 1827, place: Woolwich, Greater London, England, and his death as April 30, 1857 in Montevideo. An accompanying note to the portrait states that the subject died young in Montevideo of yellow fever, so this may be his grave (see link).
