Front of glass is imitation tortoise shell with a decorative border of gold and black

Stamped the cover of the case: Mr KILBURN BY APPOINTMENT 234 REGENT STREET with two coats of arms between the lettering. It is the royal warrant and photographer's name, 'Mr Kilburn, 234 Regent Street', stamped in gold on front. Kilburn' studio was based at 234 Regent street 234 Regent Street in Westminster between 1845 - July 1855.

Ornate case with different moulded designs on front and back: front has central motif of roses with leaves, surrounded by scrolls, lines, with 'engine-turned' ground; back has scroll patterns and lines with a grainy ground. Velvet cushion cover has a central motif of a vine leaf and tendril.

Although not marked as by Claudet, the provenance is from his descendants and the domestic setting is a stage set in Claudet's studio.
