A fine example of daguerreotype technology: mechanically polished plate, curved glass cover, very decorative mat with four roundels in the corner spandrels: two classical female heads in profile at the top, two views of castles below. Also linear and foliate decoration.

Hurts Hall, unscreened to the south east of the town, is a neo-Elizabethan mansion of 1893, rebuilt after the elegant 1803 bow-fronted house by Samuel Wyatt was destroyed by fire in 1890. It was lately the home of the Long family, plantation and slave owners in Jamaica, who were nevertheless squires and benefactors to the town. They were linked by descent to the powerful North family of nearby Glemham Hall. Note also that the black japanned frame has an ornate metal frame around the image, gilt bronze, also metal hanging loop and vine-leaf and grape metal fixing mount.

The girl has a pensive expression, her fair hair is in ringlets. She wears a pale knitted cardigan with a paler edging, a lace collar and a plaid dress. She has buttoned-up short boots and white hosiery. In her left hand she holds something that may be a bonnet. the painted backdrop shows the base of a classical column, possibly a romantic landscape. The doll wears a pale dress and a pale bonnet or cap, with pink lappets across the front of her dress. Hand coloured, gold highlights. Creator is Kilburn.
