An interior view within the Crystal Palace showing a Romanesque arch, two tomb monuments, double-benches, bas-relief carving. After housing the Great Exhibition in 1851 the Crystal Palace had been dismantled and rebuilt on a site at Sydenham, south east London, reopening in June 1854. The 'Palace of the People' as it became known, was at first a huge success as the world's first 'theme park'.

Held in a Wharton case

Crystal Palace interior view of a hall with struts and railings supporting a mezzanine floor. Vegetation is planted on the ground floor and some vines crawl up the trellis. There is a sculpture in the foreground of a classical figure with a staff and a dog at his side, which is licking him in recognition, and which he pats. This is the scene when the dog recognises Ulysses on his return to Ithaca. On the plinth is Ulysses in reverse writing. The sculptor is Lawrence MacDonald.
