During the 18th century, engraving in silver was an art reserved primarily for small objects, such as tobacco boxes. A new development in this period was experimentation in colour. For this box, the artist used different kinds of metal to make the scene appear more realistic. The young woman’s white body is made of silver, her nipples of copper.
