The war prisoner exchange during the First World War was initiated by the Red Cross. Damaged prisoners of war would be exchanged between Russia and Germany. The exchange took place via Sweden, and the soldiers were brought home by boat and train. 63,463 injured soldiers passed Trelleborg from 12 August 1915 until the end of the war three years later. 118 soldiers received their grave in Trelleborg.
