Netsuke carved from ivory, depicting the popular god of fortune, Hotei, one of the Seven Popular Gods of Fortune, Shichifukujin, seated, leaning against his sack. Hotei is the God of Contentment and Happiness, usually dressed in a loose priestly garb, often holding a fan and carrying a large bag containing valuables, takaramono - hence he is often surrounded by children curious to know the contents of the bag.‖ Stamp-netsuke; unsigned pre-1830; depiction: Hotei
