Around 1503/04 Dürer designed the woodcut “Saint Francis receiving the wounds.” In Dürer, the stigmatization taking place during a forty days of Lent near Assisi takes place in a densely overgrown area a little away from a village. Francis kneels on the ground, looks up at the sky and honorably raises his hands. For the visualization of the received crucifixion wounds, rays are based on the body of Christ, nailed to a winged cross, which hovers as an appearance in the sky. A companion of the saint is sitting at a short distance. Without noticing any of the events, he fell asleep on his book. The devotional image is accompanied by a Latin prayer text below the representation. In his publication of 1827, Heller mentions that there are deductions in Clair-obscur (cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.665.1829).
