Saint Andrew

For the first time published in 1509/10 Wittenberger Heiltumsbuch, Lucas Cranach d.Ä. 124 woodcuts (see Zimmermann 1929, pp. 18-24). He was commissioned by Friedrich the Weisen, who wanted to present his extensive collection of relics in a publicity manner (cf. Cárdenas 2002, pp. 33-110). This is a statuette showing Saint Andrew. He is depicted with a bearded face, walks on a floral background and carries the St. Andrew’s Cross, while holding in his hands a defunct book in which he reads. His head is accentuated with a beam wreath.
