The village (Die Obere Vorstat, Bolgárszék) was one of the bordered districts of Brasov. Located in the southern part of the Citadel, between the mountains, it was inhabited by Romanians. Their access to the Citadel was made in the first half of the nineteenth century by three gates: the Ecaterina Gate (until 1820, when it was closed), the Shia Gate (erected between 1827-1828, which still exists today) and the Horse Fair Gate (erected in 1820).
