In Asia, stacking boxes were used to transport food provisions. During the 19th century they became popular among European merchants in Canton – not because of their function, but rather because of the virtuoso carving in ivory. The walls of the box are decorated with Chinese figures in a landscape against an openwork background. The handles are dragon-shaped.
