With respect to the second state of this print, here Rembrandt only altered subtle details, for instance the white border of Mary’s head covering so that her face would show up better. This impression is printed on Chinese paper, which was warmer in tone than western paper. Rembrandt thus reinforced the suggestion that this nocturnal scene is illuminated by the yellow glow emanating from the lanterns.
